Homeowners in the UK have been urged by a leading insurer to ensure their homes are properly insured and protected from the effects of the forthcoming winter weather.

Cornhill Direct has released the advice after a survey by the company found that many people have not installed protection for their water piping and central heating systems in preparation for colder weather.

Speaking about the survey, the insurer's spokesman Simon Coughlin said: "The winter weather is the biggest cause of domestic emergencies. When a cold snap bites, pipes can freeze and overworked central heating systems break down.

"More than 50 per cent of people do not know if their insurer provides an emergency helpline. People should keep this number to hand in case they need it this winter."

Many other companies have made moves to protect customers as cold weather hits, with British Gas recently uniting with Help the Aged in an effort to wipe out fuel poverty in the UK.

The organisations started that campaign after a study found that a million elderly people have to cut back on essentials to pay their energy bills in winter.
