Christmas shopping has the effect of temporarily increasing the value of most people's home contents, homeowners were warned this week.

The pre-Christmas stockpiling of expensive gifts and food could mean that some people's home contents insurance is not adequate for the value of their possessions.

Sadly, the festive season also typically sees a spate of burglaries as people leave their homes empty for extended periods of time while visiting friends and family.

"People do not consider the cumulative value of the gifts which they store or bring into their home during the festive season and it is vital that they remember that the value of these presents will impact on their home contents insurance," warned Laura Wood of NFU Mutual.

She added: "People living in rural areas can also be more susceptible to power cuts and long term power loss and when you have a freezer full of lovely Christmas goodies, this can be disastrous."
