The government has been urged by an energy watchdog to come up with a clear plan on the installation of smart meters in every UK household.
energywatch, in partnership with the Energy Retail Association and Utility Week, was behind the calls after a number of all-party MPs revealed their backing for a motion on the installation of the technology across Britain.
However, while the body's chief executive, Allan Asher, said he was pleased that the prime minister was "convinced" of the technology's merits, a clear plan was necessary if 45 million meters are to be put into action within the next decade.
David Taylor MP, who sponsored the motion, added: "Not only will smart meters transform the relationship between consumers and energy suppliers, energy in the home will be used more efficiently as a result, to the benefit of all."
energywatch and its partners launched their "Look Smart" campaign in the middle of October with a view to urging the government to scrap plans to install interim devices and concentrate efforts on the roll-out of smart meter technology.
