Homeowners have been warned by an industry body that an extension to a property could lead to an increase in the cost of home insurance premiums.

Alan Tovey, who is director of the Basement Information Centre, stated that many people may not realise that an extension, including a basement conversion, boosts the value of the property.

He added that people who are considering changes to their homes should ensure that those working on their home are fully insured.

"Your house insurance is based on the value of your property, on the rebuild costs," he explained.

"If you extend your house, whether it's a basement or anything, you're likely to find that your premium will increase."

Homeowners in the UK were also recently urged by Cornhill Direct to ensure that their homes are properly insured against the effects of the forthcoming winter weather.

A survey by the company found that many people have not installed protection for their water piping and central heating systems in preparation for the onset of colder temperatures.
