Businesses in the UK need protection from the energy regulator while resolving issues with energy suppliers, according to energywatch.

The energy watchdog urged companies to consider contacting their trade bodies and get involved in Ofgem's consultation process on improving the complaints process to help electricity customers.

Allan Asher, who is energywatch's chief executive, made the comments at the Major Energy Users' Council Conference in London.

He explained: "Although they are the lifeblood of the UK economy, as energy consumers small businesses have no formal protections.

"energywatch argues that all small businesses with ten or fewer employees, regardless of how much energy they consume, should have protection from lousy service or sharp practice by energy suppliers."

Mr Asher's comments have come after none of the "Big Six" energy suppliers received a "satisfied" rating from their customers in research by the watchdog.

Poor billing and contract disputes were found to be the most regular problems that businesses suffered when dealing with their electricity providers.
