Around a third of businesses in the UK view improving their energy efficiency as an ideal way to demonstrate their green credentials, according to a new study.

The research by the Carbon Trust found that 26 per cent of businesses have been affected by environmental issues, but only one per cent of companies have measured their carbon footprint.

Speaking about the findings, Carbon Trust chief executive Tom Delay said that the research was evidence that companies were becoming "more aware than ever" on the realities of climate change.

He added: "This is very encouraging, and shows UK business is on the move on climate change.

"Larger businesses in particular are beginning to understand the opportunities climate change presents and are working out how best to exploit them."

The Carbon Trust was established by the government to promote the importance of climate change awareness to businesses across the UK.

Other recent research by the body outlined how micro-combined heat and power systems can reduce the energy costs of commercial electricity customers by up to 20 per cent.
