British Gas has won back a number of customers that it lost at the start of this year, according to a trading statement released by the company's owner.

Centrica revealed that the energy supplier's residential services division now serves 16 million customer accounts after regaining a number of clients in the second half of 2007.

The company also stated that despite improvements in customer service, better performance in the area remained a "key priority".

However, the statement released by the company also revealed concerns over a possible increase in gas and electricity prices in the UK, saying that high wholesale gas prices could cause problems in the coming year.

"Looking forward, the high wholesale prices will, if sustained, create a more difficult environment for retail energy suppliers in the UK going into 2008," the statement read.

"We will continue to monitor this with regard to future pricing policy."

The announcement by Centrica to improve its customer service has come after recent research by energywatch criticised its performance in the area.
