A leading climate change body has launched an action plan for businesses looking to improve their carbon footprint in the new year.

The Carbon Trust published a list of tips to help companies save £1.4 billion on their energy bills and the release of more than 11 million tonnes of carbon emissions.

Suggestions released by the body include the replacement of inefficient lighting in a workplace, the switching off of all non-essential equipment when not in use and the use of timers on water coolers and vending machines.

In addition, the trust has suggested that the lowering of central heating by one degree can reduce the heating bill of an office by eight per cent a year.

Speaking about the recommendations, Carbon Trust chief executive Tom Delay said: "Reducing your carbon footprint through improved energy efficiency should be top of the new year's resolution list for any business in 2008."

The Carbon Trust was established by the government to promote energy efficiency to businesses and accelerate the creation of a low-carbon economy in the UK.
