Homeowners should shop around and compare insurance policies to ensure that all of their property's contents are insured, according to an online advice service.

Fair Investment Company director James Caldwell added that new gadgets received over the Christmas period may not be covered under a consumer's existing cover.

Speaking after research found that one in seven policies do not offer additional cover over Christmas, he added that with gifts being more expensive than ever before, people should update their cover.

"Many policies now offer optional extras such as additional cover for gifts, emergency home cover in the event of a burst pipe or leak and if you make your home more secure, you could benefit from lower premiums," he explained.

"All in all, it is certainly worth shopping about and comparing a number of policies to ensure that all your contents are insured."

InsureandGo also recently stated that consumers must also understand that travel insurance exists to protect people from more than cancelled flights.

The company's spokesperson, Perry Wilson, said that the medical aspect of the cover is more important to fully protect someone travelling abroad.
