British Gas has launched an initiative to help its most vulnerable customers out of fuel poverty.

The company's Winter Warmer scheme is to offer elderly households struggling to afford their energy bills the chance to receive £90 winter credit, as well as free cavity wall and lost insulation.

In addition, the initiative offers households a pack featuring advice on how they can manage utility bills, reduce their energy consumption and also save money on their gas and electricity costs.

Commenting on the scheme, British Gas managing director Phil Bentley said: "This should be welcome news for those British Gas customers who have the most difficulty paying their fuel bills.

"It is a tailored package to help the most vulnerable of our elderly customers reduce their current winter bill, access our lowest rates and, very importantly, reduce their energy bills and wastage through free and simple energy efficiency."

British Gas also recently launched a scheme with Help the Aged to highlight the work that the government needs to do to eradicate fuel poverty.
