Pet insurance has been described as "very important" for animal lovers by a leading UK pet health store.
Ricky Thomas, the managing director of Petmeds.co.uk, said it is vital that pet owners choose the right policy for their animals, encouraging them to get insurance "from day one".
He added that there a number of matters that pet owners need to deal with when looking after animals, including certain issues "which can cost a fortune".
"The most important thing is that there are brands out there who say they will pay for the life of that treatment, whereas there are probably 90 per cent of them which have a very low cap limit on a condition, and sometimes it's not even per year," he explained.
Mr Thomas's comments have come after a spokesman for Tesco Pet Insurance also urged consumers to get cover for their pets.
Allan Burns said that a visit to the vet could result in a "hefty price to pay" for animal lovers without insurance.
