People who are considering their plans for retirement should assess all of their options, according to the National Association of Pension Funds (NAPF).

A spokesperson for the body, Mark Brooks, said that some pensions available to consumers may offer them incentives including tax relief, while people should also research stakeholder, equity and personal products.

However, he added that pension plans offered by employers are one of the best ways for workers to save for their long-term future.

"The workplace pension is still the main option especially because of the available tax relief and also the contributions that employers will make into a workplace pension," he explained.

Established in 1923, NAPF represents and promotes the interests of all aspects of the pensions industry.

Last year, research by the body claimed that the market for workplace pension schemes in the UK remains stable.

However, the study also revealed that some employers were concerned by the effect that the government's pension reforms may have on their plans.
