One in five people in the UK do not read the terms and conditions of their insurance policies before they sign up to them, according to new research.
Friends Provident's study also found that nine out of ten Brits have always been truthful when signing up to a cover policy, while over half also thought that dishonesty could lead them to not being paid any benefits.
The findings also revealed that people are more likely to approach an independent financial adviser when buying insurance than ask for advice from their friends and family.
Mark Jones, the protection products and actuarial manager at Friends Provident, said that it was good to see people recognising the importance of telling the truth when applying for deals.
He added: "The insurance business is here to provide peace of mind and is not just about collecting premiums and paying valid claims."
Friends Provident's research has come after a study by Nationwide found that around a quarter of those with buildings insurance do not know what exactly is covered under their policies.
