People in the UK have been urged by a financial columnist to be proactive in improving their personal finances.

Cesarina Holm-Kander, who also presents Channel 4's Your Money or Your Wife, stated that there are "always better deals" available to consumers, so people should ensure they find the best ones for them.

She also urged individuals to consider visiting the free Your Money Matters Show at London's Excel centre in February for personal finance help, before claiming that the average family is "wasting £5,000 a year" by not assessing their deals.

"A lot of people are scared about personal finance and there's absolutely no reason to be. Just get smart, get savvy, get informed and get down to the Excel centre," she added.

The Your Money Matters Show is set to feature over 50 seminars and workshops designed to help the public improve their personal finance situation.

Ms Holm-Kander will also be on hand at the event, which is set to take place on February 2nd and 3rd.
