One of the UK's biggest energy suppliers has completed its takeover of an Irish electricity'>business electricity provider.

Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) is set to gain around 3,500 commercial customers through its acquisition of CHP Supply, which trades as CH Power in the country's electricity market.

The energy supply director of SSE, Alistair Phillips-Davies, said the takeover was the first phase of the energy supplier's efforts to increase its presence in Ireland.

He added: "It provides SSE with its first 3,500 customers and establishes a sound foundation to pursue our stated objective of becoming a significant player in this market."

SSE's announcement on the deal has come after it revealed it had no plans to review its household gas and electricity prices in the imminent future.

The energy provider said that it would consider its tariffs at the start of British Summer Time at the earliest after rival companies British Gas, EDF Energy and npower all recently upped their prices.
