Sainsbury's Bank has offered motorists a range of tips to ensure they do not need to make claims during the current cold weather.

The financial services firm's insurance division has advised drivers to ensure their vehicle has had a winter service, as well as monitoring the condition of its oil, water and brake fluid levels.

It has also stated that motorists should also have antifreeze at hand as conditions worsen and called for people to check the pressure of their tyres.

Joanne Mallon, Sainsbury's car insurance manager, added that drivers should make sure they do no leave their vehicles vulnerable to thieves while warming up the engine.

She added: "When it's freezing out it can be tempting to leave the engine running to speed up the defrosting process while you nip back inside to finish getting ready.

"But this could have terrible consequences and you may find that you're not insured against it."

Halifax Home Insurance also recently warned homeowners to check what they are insured for before they knock down walls or make changes to their properties.
