British households have been urged to switch their energy suppliers if there are more competitive deals available.

The energywatch organisation has suggested that while many suppliers are upping their tariffs there are savings to be had for those who make the effort.

Furthermore, the energy watchdog has warned that consumers who fail to consider switching could miss out on potential savings because power companies tend to reserve their most attractive deals for new customers.

Georgina Walsh, a spokesperson for energywatch, said: "It is always a good idea to switch because if you've never switched before and you're with your original supplier, you'll be paying more than your supplier is charging [new customers] to attract them."

In addition, Ms Walsh noted that an increase in the number of households who change their energy provider will encourage those businesses to offer incentives and less expensive deals.

Already in 2008, EDF Energy, Scottish Power, npower, British Gas and E.ON have raised their prices for consumer energy supplies.
