One of the UK's leading energy suppliers has announced that it has become the first provider to reach new government targets on energy efficiency.

ScottishPower was one of the major six suppliers set specific targets by Westminster in 2005 to reduce the energy use of its household customers.

It has been revealed in the past week that the provider has now hit its target through its use of a £150 million programme, which was created to encourage its customers to embrace energy efficiency.

As part of the initiative, the supplier offered customers insulation, energy efficient lighting and boiler replacement services to help them cut bills.

Commenting on the company's success, ScottishPower's energy retail director Willie MacDiarmid said hitting the target was "a tremendous effort".

ScottishPower recently became one of five major providers to increase its household energy prices, upping costs for its gas and electricity by 15 per cent and 14 per cent respectively.

The company has around five million customers across the UK.
