A UK body which provides advice to people in financial difficulty has warned consumers that having multiple credit cards can "become confusing".

James Ketchell, the spokesperson for the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS), stated that while there are plenty of reasons for people to use a number of cards, it could impact on their efforts to sensibly manage their finances.

However, he also suggested that consumers are more aware on the topic of credit than ever before.

"It's very easy with credit cards because you're not seeing the money in real terms," he explained.

"But I think now people are realising, perhaps more than they were in previous times, that this is real money and it has to be paid back."

Statistics from Datamonitor found that the average person in the UK had an average of 1.4 credit cards at the end of 2006.

The figure was found to be twice as many as the number held by people in Norway, the next-placed country.
