A leading insurance company has urged tenants to not be "over reliant" on landlords and presume they have insured the contents of their property.
Norwich Union has stated that many people, especially those sharing rented housing in cities, may be under the impression that landlords are liable for providing insurance.
However, the firm's household underwriting consultant Alison King said that landlords legally would not be able to do that.
She added that some people may also be a bit scared of taking out cover, but added they had no reason to be.
"There's so many direct ways to do it. You can log onto a website and do it in a few minutes and there really should be no excuse," she explained.
Recent research by Zurich Insurance claimed that people living in rented property in the UK are "gambling" £8 billion of personal possessions by not protecting themselves against bad weather or crime.
