People in the UK spend around two years worrying about their spending and borrowing habits, according to new research.
The study by Co-operative Financial Services found that 48 per cent of adults are worried about their levels of debt, while 80 per cent are troubled about their lack of savings.
It was also found that people between 18 and 30 spend around two days a month considering their financial situation, while people over 55 spend only two and a half hours thinking about money matters.
Scott McPhail, savings product manager at the Co-operative Bank, said the findings were "worryingly clear".
He explained: "We would like to stress to people that it's never too late to regain control of your finances - taking full advantage of your tax-free savings allowance before April and investing as little a pound in a cash ISA is one way that you can help to ease the strain."
Recent research by Axa found that despite concerns over saving, British people start putting money away for their retirement earlier than workers in most other European countries.
