A UK building society has urged homeowners to ensure their gardens are covered by an adequate amount of insurance.

Nationwide made the call after research found that around 35 per cent of people value the contents of their gardens at between £250 and £1,000.

The company added that insurance claims for garden furniture and ornaments were among the most common received, before urging people to photograph expensive items in case they need to identify them when stolen.

Robin Bailey, the building society's insurance director, said: "It is really important that these items are adequately insured against acts of theft or vandalism.

"We understand that customers want more from their insurance provider, which is why our home insurance includes up to £1,000 of cover for contents in the garden as standard."

Lloyds TSB recently stated that it experience a 150 per cent increase in new claims registered on Monday morning due to the recent storms that swept across the UK.

The insurance provider's customer calls were also up by over 50 per cent.
