Consumers in the UK have been urged to carefully consider what they need to be covered for when taking out travel insurance.

The British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) has stated that if people plan to take part in sports or other outdoor activities while on holiday, they need ensure that their policy covers it.

Graeme Trudgill, the body's technical and corporate affairs executive, said it was key that people think about what they hope to do and speak to a broker about the plans.

"What you have to think about as a traveller is: 'OK, I am going on holiday. What do I want to do? What am I likely to do?', he explained.

"If you are going on a beach holiday, you might be doing some paragliding there. If so, make sure you are covered for that and try and get a policy that does not charge any extra."

Recent research by BIBA claimed that less than half of consumers who bought policies from travel agents were advised about hazardous sports.
