UK broadband is lagging behind its European and global neighbours, according to a report.
While ultra-high broadband speeds of 100 mbps are common in Japan and South Korea, and becoming more widely available in France, Germany and Sweden, the UK's best shot at high-speed is only four mbps, says Forbes.
High and ultra-high speed connections are capable of carrying significantly more traffic and "more sophisticated applications and services", Forbes added.
While the website could not give specifics about what kinds of applications or uses would drive the rolling out of a faster internet infrastructure, it said doing so would signal "radical transformation of the internet and communications more generally".
A key factor it cited would be equally fast upload and download speeds or "symmetric" services.
The European Commission's 13th Progress Report on the Single Telecoms Market noted that the UK, Belgium, Luxembourg and France all now had a higher broadband penetration than the US by July 2007.
