Online shoppers have little to worry about in terms of the risk of fraud when they are using approved websites, according to the director of consumer guide Shopsafe.co.uk

Simon Crisp explained that people who make use of the internet to purchase goods by credit card do not run a significant risk.

He said that banks use schemes such as SecureCode, which can be described as an online version of chip and pin.

"What we would recommend for people is to sign up to those schemes and always use your credit card online," Mr Crisp advised.

Another tip he offered was to use a website that has been recommended as safe to use.

Credit protection firm CPP claimed that the typical consumer could spend as much as £72,000 online during their lifetime.

A survey by the firm suggested a tenth of online shoppers have been the victim of fraud online.
