A debt counselling service has suggested the importance for consumers to be sensible when using credit cards.

Thomas Charles & Co's director James Falla has said that people often fall into debt when they choose to use a credit card help them cover living expenses or over-budgeting.

He added that consumers should consider they finances and attempt to live within their budget to avoid relying on credit cards as a way to pay off bills and other debts.

"If you're looking as though you ' re going to be spending more than you've got, then unfortunately that means, one way or another, you're going to go into debt," he explained.

"To avoid doing that you have to maybe not spend the money you thought you were going to spend on a holiday or computer."

According to recent research by Citizens Advice, a record number of people are seeking help with debt worries.

The same study found that mortgage arrears went up by 35 per cent in January and February compared to the same period last year.
