A leading travel company has stated that travel insurance is an "absolute must" for those who are planning to head abroad in a gap year.

STA Travel has said that such cover would mean that travellers would be protected from almost every eventuality no matter where they are in the world.

Recent research by i-to-i found that 29 per cent of people planned to leave work last year to go travelling abroad, which represents a ten per cent increase on figures for 2006.

STA Travel explained that as the trend continues to grow, it is vital for people to stay up-to-date with details concerning flights and plan ahead.

A spokesperson said: "We would recommend that travellers plan as much of their trip as possible in advance.

"There are RSS live feeds that travellers can subscribe to via their mobile phone, which will keep them up to date with 'what's on when' and flight offers - great content for the active traveller."

STA Travel is a specialist company for students and young people which provides them with discounted flights and holiday deals, as well as travel insurance and accommodation.
