Tenants have been urged to ensure they have contents insurance that fully covers the value of their belongings.

Andrew Lowe, the head of Direct Line home insurance, has stated that those renting a property should also discuss security measures that are in place on properties.

He went on to explain that good measures can often reduce the amount that both tenants and landlords have to pay in terms of contents and building cover premium.

"Investing in good quality locks for doors and windows will not only offer you peace of mind, but will also reduce your premiums," Mr Lowe explained.

He added that tenants could also contact their insurance provider for advice on how they can improve their home security.

Recent research by Endsleigh found that Nottingham is the UK's riskiest area for household theft, while Guildford was found to be the safest.

The study also found that Bournemouth, Milton Keynes and Newport were the riskiest places for household accidents.
