People who are heading abroad have been warned that they may need to individually insure valuable items that they plan to take with them.
The Association of British Insurers' spokesperson Malcolm Tarling has stated that travel insurance policies may only cover people for a limited amount, before adding that some consumers may have higher limits on their household policies.
"It's a question of checking your policy and checking if you have cover for items outside of the home under your household policy," he explained.
The spokesperson added that it is "always sensible" to read an insurance policy as it can help people understand what they are covered for before they buy it.
Recent research by Sainsbury's Travel Insurance predicted that up to ten per cent of people heading overseas in the near future may go without insurance.
According to the study, 4.2 million people did not take out cover when they last went abroad, while the most common claims received by the firm concern lost or stolen money and baggage, as well as a cancellation of a trip due to family illness.
