The government's plans to amend legislation and speed up the introduction of smart meters across the UK have been welcomed by the sector's watchdog.

energywatch has said that the proposed changes to the Energy Bill meant that the introduction of the meters, which are designed to provide more accurate information on electricity usage, across Britain is "one small step closer".

The campaigns director of the body, Adam Scorer, went on to explain the benefits of using the technology.

He explained: "Not only will smart meters allow people to make simple changes in their energy use that make a difference in the fight towards climate change.

"Smart meters will also wipe out the excuse for rip-off prepayment meters charges and bring a long overdue end to estimated bills."

The support for the proposed changes to legislation has come after energywatch joined a number of campaign groups at a summit to discuss fuel poverty this week.

Organised by Ofgem, the meeting led to the creation of a new set of measures to tackle the issue.
