ScottishPower has announced that its renewable energy fund scheme is celebrating its tenth anniversary.

The energy supplier's Green Energy Trust was created to provide money for customers looking to develop community-based projects.

Since it was established, the fund has given out over £900,000 to around 91 energy projects.

Alison McKean, head of environment at ScottishPower, said: "We have been amazed at the range – and scale – of the projects we have been able to help over the years.

"It was really about us doing our bit for the environment and helping our customers to do the same."

She added that the grant scheme had been created through the ScottishPower Green Fund Option tariff, from which a small tariff is invested in the fund.

At the end of last month, ScottishPower also announced plans to add 36-turbines to its Whitelee windfarm project.

The site currently consists of 22 turbines, but the extension will increase its output of green energy by up to 130 megawatts.
