Scottish businesses are to be urged to improve the energy efficiency at a major new event today.

Around 100 company leaders are to attend the Prince of Wales's May Day Business Summit in Edinburgh, where Prince Charles will ask them via a satellite link to tackle their carbon footprints.

The Scotsman reports that the event, which has been organised by Scottish Business in the Community (SBC), is one of 12 similar conferences across the UK.

Samantha Barber, the chief executive of SBC, told the newspaper: "Scottish businesses are already demonstrating their willingness to tackle the global crisis of climate change."

Action by businesses could also have a major influence on the behaviour of the public in both the country and the rest of the UK, she added.

The event follows comments from John Treble, the managing director of advice firm the Green Consultancy, who recently stated that companies have a "huge amount of work" to do to reduce their carbon footprints.
