Those living in Scotland are generally less satisfied with the process of switching their energy, mortgage or telephone provider, according to a new study.

Research by the Scottish Consumer Council (SCC) found that many people do not think that switching deals is "worth the bother", while those who are loyal to companies generally get poorer deals than new customers.

It was also found that those not given the chance to improve their deals include the disabled, older consumers and people without internet access.

Douglas Sinclair, the chair of the SCC, said: "The relative lack of mobility between suppliers for people on low incomes seems to be down to a reluctance of some providers to make them welcome.

"This is ignoring the fact that things like electricity and gas are essential and, however small the household budget, people make sure they have enough to pay their bills."

Established to help people get a fair deal, the SCC works in a number of areas including the health, education and local government sectors.
