Household energy customers are to advice the UK's energy regulator under new measures announced yesterday.

Ofgem is to establish the consumer panel in October but has begun its search for domestic gas and electricity users that want to join the scheme.

The body's chief executive Alistair Buchanan has said that having an insight into energy is a "key concern" for the organisation due to concerns about rising energy costs and climate change.

He added: "Our new consumer panel will be a ready sounding board for the regular consumer’s take on issues that matter most and on the key challenges such as willingness to pay for security of supply and curbs on environmental damage caused by energy supply."

The new Consumer First panel will also work with the National Consumer Council when it replaces energywatch later this year.

Ofgem recently announced that is has appointed Stuart Cook as transmission director for its Networks division.

Mr Cook is joining the body from the PA Consulting Group.
