Around seven million homes across the UK feature unfinished DIY projects, according to findings from Halifax Home Insurance.

The research by the company revealed that 1.7 million households have been living with the unfinished work for about two years, while a quarter of million have had such problems for a decade.

Wales and the south-west of England were found to be the places where homes were most likely to have such issues, with Scotland the least likely location.

David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, said such homeowners should be careful not to invalidate cover for their property.

"Budgeting effectively for the financial cost of completing a DIY project and being realistic about the time it will take to complete it can save significant heartache," he added.

Recent research by Zurich found that one in six homeowners have called in experts to fix their DIY mistakes.

The study also revealed that 39 per cent of those who called in professional help tried to save money by making improvements themselves.
