Research has revealed that consumers in the UK regard changing their energy provider as a "top money saving measure".

The study by Alliance & Leicester found that a 20 per cent of people see changing their utility supplier as a good way to save money, while 12 per cent also believe switching to zero per cent rate credit cards as beneficial.

Other money saving measures suggested by the public included changing current accounts and consolidating credit card debts into a personal loan.

Emma Walkley, current account manager at Alliance & Leicester, said: "Taking advantage of the best financial deals on the market is always important, but more so in the current environment.

"Often making simple changes like switching to a current account provider offering a better interest rate can make any belt-tightening feel a little bit easier."

Previous research by Alliance & Leicester found that 73 per cent of Britons have made some kind of financial cutback in recent times, with 34 per cent expecting their disposable income to decrease in the near future.
