Households in the UK have been warned over the potential accidents that may arise while they enjoy a barbecue over the summer months.

Research by Abbey has found that over ten million households plan to use a barbecue in the next three months, while 2.6 million are planning to do so without having home insurance.

Tony Beckwith, head of Abbey Insurance, stated that while barbecues can be fun, people should not forget that it is "basically an open fire" and "things can go wrong".

He added: "Around 250 uninsured homes have barbecue related accidents each year, without insurance you leave yourself and your guests at risk. Be responsible and make sure you are covered."

Earlier this year, Abbey released research which found that the cost of replace items broken by children on school holidays is around £140.61 a time.

The company said that the findings demonstrated why people should ensure their home insurance covers all of their belongings for accidental damage.
