Bikes are the most commonly stolen children's toy in the UK, according to new research.

The study by Halifax Home Insurance found that bikes account for around one in five thefts from families with children under five, while paddling pools and wendy houses equipment are the second most likely items to be taken.

It was also found that 38 per cent of toys were stolen from a garden or a yard, with one in ten thefts occurring when parents are out for a meal.

David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "Parents can protect themselves from the financial costs of theft, if not the psychological impact, by investing in comprehensive home insurance cover.

"These policies can even cover the cost of replacing items taken from their garden or a public place."

Previous research by Halifax found that 1.7 million households in the UK have been living with an unfinished DIY or home renovation project for over two years.
