First-time buyers in Scotland are keen to get on the country's property ladder, according to an expert from a leading property agency.

Simon Rettie, managing director at Rettie & Co, has stated that those looking to buy their first property are as eager to purchase homes as those already involved in the housing market.

Recent research by the Bank of Scotland found that the number of owner-occupiers in the country has more than doubled since 1971, and Mr Rettie added that he believes the increases will continue.

"If you're starting from a low base and people's desire and hope to own their own home remains then, provided they can find the necessary finance and credit to facilitate that, that will be the case," he explained.

The expert's comments have come after research by Halifax claimed that Scotland had the biggest house prices in the UK during 2007.

Research by the organisation found that prices in the country rose by 13.1 per cent during the year, compared to the average increase of 5.2 per cent.
