energywatch has welcomed the government's plans to improve the information available to consumers about green tariffs.

The UK watchdog has stated that it would like "swift action" taken on the issue as it would help people to fully understand where the electricity supplied to them has come from.

However, the organisation added that changes need to be made to meet interest in renewable supplies, as research has found that commercial electricity users are currently supplied with more green power than households.

Jonathan Stearns, head of campaigns for energywatch, said the body's latest research proved there needs to be "a massive expansion in renewable capacity and the amount energy suppliers allocate to domestic consumers".

He added: "Government and industry have a huge challenge ahead if they are going to satisfy the growing consumer demand for electricity from renewable sources."

Research released by energywatch earlier this month found that around four million consumers do not understand what a green tariff is, while 11 million are not aware of them.
