Around one in five people in the UK are planning to drive abroad in the next 12 months, according to new research.

The study by Sainsbury's Car Insurance found that 17 per cent of motorists are set to take their cars to a foreign country this year, with half of those claiming they plan to drive over 1,000 miles while abroad.

It was also found that the most popular places for people to take their vehicles to are France, Ireland and Germany.

Joanne Mallon, Sainsbury's car insurance manager, said those planning to drive on foreign soil need to ensure they are adequately covered.

She explained: "Having an accident anywhere is bad enough but when abroad it can be compounded by a lack of local knowledge, to then find that the other party's damage is covered but not your own, is surely a blow worth avoiding."

Previous research by Sainsbury's found that over a million people in the UK have driven without insurance in the past 12 months.
