Ofgem is to investigate differences in the cost of gas and electricity across the UK, it has been revealed.

The energy regulator is to consider the issue in its review into the energy markets after a study by energywatch Wales found that customers in the country are paying more than those in England, Scotland or Ireland, reports the BBC.

Jane Davidson, the sustainability minister for the Welsh Assembly, has received a letter from Ofgem chairman Sir John Mogg confirming that the topic is to be looked into.

She told the news provider: "It is important that Ofgem looks at regional price differences to ensure that Welsh consumers are charged the same as other parts of the UK.

"The evidence produced by energywatch indicates that consumers in Wales are paying more for their electricity than elsewhere."

Ofgem recently published a new review in which it proposed changes to regulations that may allow smaller energy suppliers and generators to join the UK market.
