Reducing carbon emissions is no longer "a side issue" for businesses across the UK, according to an expert.

Delvin Lance, head of client engagement for the Carbon Trust, said that due to the rising cost of electricity, the problem is now a "core priority" for a number of companies.

He went on to explain that people do not realise that they can make major savings by encouraging staff to switch off lights and PC monitors.

"You can do really obvious and simple things, but [it's about] understanding the impact of that. So a lot of it is about understanding what you can do," he said.

"We're surveying companies and they're actually wasting seven million pounds a day on poor energy efficiency."

Recent research by the Carbon Trust revealed that reducing carbon emissions is rising up the agenda for many business leaders in the UK.

It was found that such people now view energy efficiency as more important than redundancies and recruitment freezes.
