The Business and Enterprise select committee report into the UK's energy market should become a "springboard" for action, according to an expert.

Adam Scorer, campaigns director of energywatch, said that the government, suppliers and regulators should act in light of the findings.

The organisation also argued that the government must publish a clear strategy for tackling poverty, while Ofgem should consider concerns about how the market is currently functioning.

European Competition authorities have also been urged to investigate ways to challenge contracts that link the price of gas to the cost of oil.

Mr Scorer said that the committee report had demonstrated that the market was "deficient and failing consumers".

"The committee has mapped a rational and practical course to get the energy market on track. That course must be traveled," he added.

Peter Luff, the chairman of the committee, yesterday claimed there were "very real problems" in the energy markets at all levels that need to be addressed by authorities.
