Energy customers in the UK should consider getting their tariffs capped or fixed, according to an expert.

Rebecca Atkinson, news editor of financial website Moneywise.co.uk, stated that while the "general" advice being offered this year was not only to switch to cheaper deals, but to also take up tariffs which can only rise to a certain level.

She added that it is "always worth" shopping around despite the current issues in the market.

"It's important that people realise prices are likely to continue to go up, so they should consider getting a capped or fixed deal now," she explained.

"These deals may not always be the cheapest but if you think ahead and think about where prices are going in the future, then it may work out cheaper down the line."

A recent report by energy consultancy firm Eclipse, which was undertaken on behalf of Centrica, found that gas bills could rise by 60 per cent over the next few years.
