A former UK energy minister has claimed that the Scottish government has access to £100 million of funding to help gas and electricity customers in the country.
Brian Wilson is expected to tell a conference today that the fund, which could be used to support those struggling to pay utility bills, was raised through the Scottish Renewables Obligation.
According to the Daily Record, the expert believes that the money is currently held by the energy regulator, Ofgem.
Talking to the newspaper, Mr Wilson said: "It is my clear understanding that the cheque would arrive tomorrow if the Scottish government had the political will to ask for it.
"They are willing enough to pick fights on other funding issues yet here is one that is entirely within their own gift to do something about. And now is the time to do it."
A recent study by the National Housing Federation has forecasted that 25 per cent of the UK could be in fuel poverty by the end of 2009.
