Energy firms in Scotland have agreed to spend more on energy efficiency as part of a £321 million effort to reduce household fuel bills, it has been revealed.
After talks with the Scottish authorities, energy companies in the country have agreed to invest funds from the £3.36 billion sum put aside to help reach carbon emissions targets.
Scottish communities minister Stuart Maxwell told the Herald he was encouraged by energy companies' willingness to work with authorities to reduce bills and help fuel-poor households.
David Porter, chief executive of the Association for Electricity Producers, told the publication people see spending on energy-efficiency measures as positive because it provides lasting benefits and can mean they end up saving by spending less on fuel bills.
In an attempt to improve the availability of advice on eco-friendly power use to consumers, the Energy Saving Trust is now keeping its helpline open into the evenings.
