Adequate travel insurance has been described by an expert as "an essential must-have" for holidaymakers.

Gideon Ingham of Asda Financial Services made the comment after recent news reports claimed that around 1,000 bags are still going missing everyday at Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5.

It has also been claimed that people travelling from that site are more likely to suffer delayed baggage than those flying from other airports.

Mr Ingham said: "Taking out adequate travel insurance shouldn't be seen as an optional extra, but an essential must-have.

"Travellers face all sorts of risks when they go on holiday from falling sick to having their baggage delayed and could end up seriously out of pocket and inconvenienced if they don't take out cover."

Sainsbury's Bank recently claimed that it is "just as essential" for those holidaying in the UK to take out travel insurance as it is for people heading abroad.

Research by the company also found that British holidaymakers take around 50 million domestic breaks a year.
