One in ten homes has been burgled or suffered an attempted burglary in the last five years, according to research.

The statistic from the Direct Line study means that 2.4 million homes in the UK have been affected by burglary.

London homes were the most targeted with 13 per cent of residents reporting burglary incidents or attempts, although this figure was closely followed by the 12 per cent of homes affected in the north of England

Head of Direct Line home insurance Andrew Lowe said instances of break-ins may increase as evenings get darker.

He added: "A few security improvements may prevent you from becoming a victim of burglary and keep your possessions safe.

"Our research shows people living in areas with a higher rate of burglary are less likely to carry out simple security enhancements such as locking windows at night."

Meanwhile, motorists have been warned that the rapid decline in daylight due to the clocks changing can lead to a higher risk of accidents.

Insurer More Than has reported that accident claims increase by five per cent around this time of year.
