A leading UK energy firm has announced it is reducing prices for customers on gas pre-payment meters.

npower claims its price drops will reduce costs by an average of £30 for consumers on the meters and match standard quarterly cash-cheque prices.

The energy firm also claims the reduction will make its gas pre-payment prices the cheapest of any of its rivals in the UK.

Kevin Miles, chief executive of npower retail, said: "These changes are as a result of reducing our costs for servicing pre-payment meters and also recognise our desire to work with Ofgem to identify workable and effective improvements in the energy retail market."

Last month, British Gas announced it was reducing its prices for customers with dual fuel prepayment meters.

The new rates are due to come into effect on December 18th and are estimated to cut prices by around £22 per year.
